About Jon
Jon Gowin has been passionate about the mandolin since 1979, when he was captivated by the sounds of David Grisman and Andy Statman in the film King of the Gypsies. Since then, he has spent decades studying, performing, and teaching a wide range of musical styles, from traditional folk to world music.
With over 20 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Science in Education, Jon brings deep knowledge, enthusiasm, and a student-centered approach to his lessons. His teaching style is highly individualized, focusing on each student's unique goals and helping them develop skills in chords, melody, ear training, tremolo, and performance techniques.
Jon has been an active performer in the Sacramento music scene, playing in a variety of bands and ensembles, including:
- The Grace Avenue Band (Bluegrass)
- Sacramento World Music Ensemble (10 years, directed by Bob Wren)
- ECUMANIA (World Music)
- NINE 8th’s IRISH, HOOLIGANS WAKE, THE BLACKBIRD (Irish bands)
For decades, Jon has also been a regular presence at Irish music sessions, further deepening his expertise in traditional styles. His love for sharing music from around the world makes him an engaging and inspiring instructor for students of all levels.
