Jazz Gitan Concert

Gypsy Jazz Workshop 4pm
Don Price of gypsyjazzguitarlessons will be joining us for a Gypsy Jazz Guitar Workshop.

The first hour will be devoted to learning the common chord voicings used in gypsy jazz and how they differ from regular jazz -plus the unique fingerings of Django himself. We will take a tune and run throuigh them using three rhytm patterns unique to gypsy jazz, called "le pompe."

The second hour will be devoted to discussing how to play over these common chords in the gypsy jazz style, and specific "line foirms" (licks and ideas) will be demonstrated and applied to an actual tune.

There will be two books on the subject made available for purchase at the end of the Sessions.

Jazz Gitan Concert 7pm
The all-acoustic ensemble Jazz Gitan plays a modern variant of 1930-1940ís Django Reinhardt-inspired gypsy jazz. They carry on the tradition of gypsy swing created by Django together with Stephane Grappelli during their domination of the Paris jazz scene. Composer and lead guitarist Don Price mixes a cascade of original sounds with the Parisian influence. The music includes latin, blues, swing, and original styles combined to create a unique foot tapping and high energy experience. The title track from the CD, "Djangit", was included on Hot Club Records magnificient collection of the latest Django influenced musicians from around the world, called "Django Festival 9." Jazz Gitan consists of Don Price on lead guitar with Giorgi Khokhobashvili on violin as the primary tour de force, with rotaing rhythm and bass players. The music is heavily influenced by the Reinhardt/Grappelli mix in the Hot Club of France, as well as the popular music of contemporary players in this genre such as Bireli LaGrene, John Jorgenson, Robin Nolan, and The Rosenberg Trio. Donís original compositions inspire in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on each melody, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture-esk. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious music...and deeply moving, whether it be a ballad or a "barn" burner.
